The Farmer in the Dell is a poem about a farmer who lives in a dell, a small wooded valley. The farmer gets married and starts a family. The poem details the relationships between various characters as the family grows and expands. The wife has a child, the child is cared for by a nurse, the nurse tends to a cow, the cow befriends a dog, the dog challenges a cat, the cat chases a mouse, and the mouse tries to get to some cheese. In the end, the cheese is all that’s left.

Suggested Activities 

  1. Run in a ring
  • Form a ring by holding hands with several children.
  • One child gets chosen as the “farmer” and has to stand in the circle’s center. 
  •  Select one child to be the “farmer” and have them stand in the center of the ring.
  • As you sing the first verse, the children in the circle should hop and move clockwise. When the verse ends, the farmer will close their eyes and choose one child to join them in the center.
  • Now, the farmer and the caught child will be at the center while the remaining kids continue singing the second verse while moving and hopping in a clockwise direction.
  • At the end of each verse, the child caught will become the farmer for the next round until only one child remains in the center.
  1. Map Out The Way
  • Print images of all the characters from the rhyme and randomly arrange them on paper.
  • Now, have your youngster use a variety of colored markers to connect each character in the poem to the one that it “takes.” For instance, the youngster will use one color to link the farmer and the wife. Then, the wife and the child appeared in a different colours.

Encourage your youngster to play outside with their friends while singing this song and teaching them this rhyme. Plan weekend picnics in picturesque local locations, like a park or a lake, where the kids can assemble and play wildly.
