What Are the Types of Disability?

Posted on February 3, 2023February 3, 2023 By Master James No Comments on What Are the Types of Disability?
Health

A disability is a condition that restricts a person’s ability to perform daily activities. It can be present at birth or acquired over the course of a person’s life.

Learning disabilities are one of the most common types of disabilities. People with these disabilities may have difficulty reading, writing or understanding math.

Physical

A physical disability refers to a person’s inability to move, stamina, or dexterity. It can be an in-born (congenital) problem or it could be caused by a disease or injury.

For example, paraplegia and quadriplegia can result from injuries to the spinal cord. This could lead to loss of limb function as well as other forms of mobility. Other conditions, such as polio and cerebral palsy, can also result in loss of mobility.

Many people with a physical disability are able to lead independent lives or fairly independent with assistance. They use adaptive equipment like wheelchairs, canes, or walkers to aid them in moving about.

Mental

A condition known as mental disability is one that severely limits an individual’s ability in one or more areas. This includes social interactions and working.

This category includes conditions that cause impairments or symptoms in memory, attention and learning, problem solving, judgement, social skills, and learning. It may begin in childhood or adolescence and affect a person’s ability to function independently.Disability Services in Melbourne Carehttps://empirecommunitycare.com.au/

People of all income levels, races, religions, and ages can be affected by mental illness. Most are treatable.

Emotional

Emotional disability is one of the categories of disabilities listed in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It refers to a student’s inability to learn and cannot be explained by any intellectual, sensory or health factors.

Students who experience emotional disturbances may also exhibit behavioral difficulties in the classroom that can interfere with their learning. These issues require the creation of a personalized program that includes goals for appropriate behavior and productive coping strategies.

Children with emotional disorders may benefit from consistent, ongoing care and support. This includes professional consultations between home, school, and the community.

Intellectual

An intellectual disability is a type of disability that affects a person’s cognitive skills. This could include difficulties with communication, understanding and problem solving.

People with intellectual disabilities typically have an IQ of 70 or less (the median IQ is 100). They may have difficulty processing information quickly, may find communication and daily living skills difficult, or may struggle with abstract concepts like money and time.

Genetic conditions, birth defects, health problems, as well as environmental factors can all lead to intellectual disability. It can also happen later in life, due to brain damage caused by an accident or illness.

Social

Social disability is the term used to describe the barriers that disabled people face in their lives. These barriers include communication, attitudinal, and physical barriers.

The social model of disability says that impairments are a problem with a person’s society, rather than their body or mind. It helps to understand disability as a social issue, and it looks at ways to remove barriers so disabled people can live independent lives with control, choice, and freedom.

The Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) pays benefits to people who are unable to work because of a medical condition. SSDI is a federal program that is funded by taxes on worker earnings.
